It’s a miraculous story about a woman who says her pet diagnosed her breast cancer.
It may sound strange, but there are scientific studies that show pets can “smell” cancer.
Pat Wykes rescues dogs for the Richardson Humane Society.
She has five dogs.
Some are foster dogs, but it was one little girl that actually rescued Pat.
“She would start sitting in my lap and smelling my right breast and going don’t you see something’s wrong?“ said Pat Wykes.
Pat says “Peanut” literally smelled her breast cancer.
“That one doctor said, ‘yeah, you’re not the first person who has said that,“ said Pat.
A study published in the Journal Integrative Cancer Therapies finds scientific evidence that a dog’s scenting ability can distinguish people in both early and late stage lung and breast cancers.
“When I went through chemo and then started getting better, she just started reverting back to being independent,“ Pat said.
Today, Pat is cancer free.
She credits Peanut for her early diagnosis and ultimate survival.
“I knew when I saved her, I was saving her life but I didn’t know she was gonna save mine,“ said Pat.
