An attorney for a South Carolina man set to die next week for killing a convenience store clerk has asked the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay of execution.
Attorney John Blume argues in the petition filed Tuesday that the justices should grant Freddie E. Owens a stay so that Blume has time to prepare an appeal of his entire case to the high court.
The justices will rule on the petition later.
Owens is set to die on Oct. 3. He has been sentenced to death three separate times for killing Greenville clerk Irene Grainger Graves during a convenience store holdup in 1997, but his first two sentences were overturned.
