Authorities in South Carolina say a man wanted in the 2005 death of a Columbia man has been arrested in Florida.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said 34-year-old Elliott Smalls was arrested Friday outside his Pensacola home.

Smalls has been a suspect in the case since the early days of the investigation into the death of 27-year-old McQuay Dawkins. Detectives believe Dawkins was killed in Columbia, although he was found dead in the trunk of a car outside of the city in suburban Lexington County.

Smalls was being held in the Escambia County, Fla., jail on Friday. The clerk of court’s office said there was no record of him having an attorney.
