The Coast Guard wants to hear from boaters about a plan to build a new bridge over the Beaufort River.
The two-lane bridge would run beside the J.E. McTeer Bridge, carrying traffic over the Intracoastal Waterway. Construction is set to start next year.
The Beaufort Gazette reports the Coast Guard wants to hear about how high the bridge should be and opinions on a system of fenders to protect pilings, as well as any other issues. Comments will be accepted until Oct. 23.
Beaufort County taxpayers are paying for the new bridge through a one-cent sales tax increase approved two years ago.
The new bridge will carry two lanes of eastbound traffic, while the old bridge will be converted to two lanes of westbound traffic.
