The men and women who died last year because of domestic violence will be remembered in a ceremony at the Statehouse.
The latest study by the Violence Policy Center ranks South Carolina second in the nation, based on population, in the number of women killed by men. That’s up from seventh nationwide.
The annual ceremony in Columbia on Monday honors the known victims of domestic violence during 2007. Last year’s ceremony recognized 50 known victims for 2006. It was the highest death toll in at least five years.
Family members and friends will hold up life-sized silhouettes that represent each victim. One silhouette will represent the potential unknown victims.
The ceremony coincides with national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
