An upstate family barely escaped a fire that spread from their chimney.  It started while they slept Tuesday morning.

Firefighters say the home in Anderson County didn’t have electricity or gas.  The Edmonds family was using a fire place to stay warm, but the flames escaped a faulty chimney and spread through the roof.

A neighbor saw the flames and ran to help.

“Her whole face was just smoked up.  You could see the soot,” said neighbor Tommy Sentell.

The Red Cross in helping the family.

Firefighters recommend that you have your chimney swept before lighting it this year and say you should never go to bed with a lit fire.
