N. Charleston names new fire chief

Assistant Fire Chief Gregory A. Bulanow has been chosen to take charge of the North Charleston Fire Department beginning February 1, 2009.

Bulanow, 36, a native of Greendale, WI, began his firefighting career as a firefighter within the ranks of the North Charleston Fire Department in 1996.  Bulanow holds a master’s degree in management from Southern Wesleyan University.

Bulanow is a recipient of many professional awards, including National Finalist for the Excellence in Fire & Life Safety Award (2007) and Hero of the Year Award, South Carolina (2006).  Also, Bulanow was a team finalist in the National and World Championship, Firefighter Combat Challenge (2005).

Bulanow is also a member of several professional organizations including, the International Fire Chief’s Association, South Carolina State Firefighters Association, Charleston County Fire Chief’s Association and serves as Secretary for the Tri-County Fire Chief’s Association.

He is nearing completion for his certification for the Executive Fire Officer Program through the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD.

Leonard Judge, 56, North Charleston’s current Fire Chief and a 34 year veteran of the North Charleston Fire Department, will enter into planned retirement on January 31, 2009.
