House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the faith represented by the Christmas tree on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol is a part of America’s heritage.

Pelosi was joined by Montana’s governor and congressional delegation this evening in a ceremony to light the Capitol Christmas Tree. It’s a 70-foot-tall fir from Montana’s Bitterroot National Forest.

Pelosi acknowledged “all the gifts God has given us and how blessed we are” and encouraged Americans to pray for world peace this holiday season.

There was a brief delay when she and Montana fourth-grader Chris Gabrielsen threw the switch to light the tree, followed by gasps from the crowd as it suddenly illuminated.

The Air Force Band then played “O Christmas Tree” and “Joy to the World.“
