THE GAME
The Bucs open Big South conference play against the High Point Panthers on the road in High Point, NC. The matchup will mark just the second road game of the season for CSU after opening the year at Iowa and playing their last five games at home (3 - CSU Field House, 2 - N. Charleston Coliseum). The Panthers currently lead the all-time series against CSU 10-8. The schools split their two meetings last season, with both schools winning at home. High Point beat the Bucs, 73-47, at the Mills Athletic Center in the first meeting, while the Bucs took the second matchup, 81-77, at CSU Field House. The game marks the conference opener for both schools.
PROWLING WITH THE PANTHERS
The Panthers are led by head coach Bart Lundy, currently in his 6th season on the High Point sideline. Lundy has led the Panthers to an 89-69 record, including a 2-3 mark thus far this season.
The Panthers enter this contest off a, 100-50, win over Montreat College (11/28). Prior to that victory, High Point lost to USF, 46-59, and North Carolina State, 56-69, on the road. The Panthers lost their season-opener to Duquesne, 84-55, but bounced back with a home win over Atlanta Christian College, 91-51.
The backcourt has led High Point to this point in the season. Jr-G Eugene Harris leads the Panthers in scoring, notching 15.8 points per game. Fr-G Nick Barbour has added 12.6 ppg in his first season at High Point. So-G David Campbell leads HPU in rebounding, pulling down 6.4 boards per game.
THE LAST TIME OUT…
The Bucs rescued a victory over North Florida with a late comeback, resulting in a, 68-60, overtime win. The win kept the Bucs undefeated (3-0) at CSU Field House. Jamarco Warren and Omar Carter led the Bucs with 15 points each, while both hit three-pointers in the final minute to spur the Bucs comeback. For Warren, it marked the sixth consecutive game he has at least shared the CSU points lead. Joel Lamb added a career-high 11 points to the win.
CONFERENCE OPENING REMARKS
CSU comes off a 4-10 record in the Big South conference in 2007-08, which placed them eighth in the conference. They last claimed the Big South tournament championship in 1996-97, earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost in the opening round to UCLA. Barclay Radebaugh has posted a 13-32 record in his three seasons in the Big South.
BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL
Buccaneers freshman forward Kelvin Martin has quickly become an offensive factor for CSU. “K-Mart” as he is known, established a new career high for points and rebounds in each of his first five games. He scored 6 points against Iowa, bettered that with 11 against Furman, tallied 14 against College of Charleston, one-upped that with 15 against Toccoa Falls and took it one point further with 16 against The Citadel. He also increased his rebounding totals in each of his first four games. He recorded his first double-double against CofC on Nov. 20th (14 pts/11 reb), made it two straight with his second (15 pts/15 reb) aginst Toccoa Falls and accomplished the feat for a third-straight game 11/25 vs. The Citadel (16 pts/10 reb)..
RIGHT ON THE JA-MARC-O
Bucs sophomore guard Jamarco Warren has been lights out from three-point range through six games. Warren, who connected on 73 three-point field goals in his freshman year (2nd most in school history) has hit 27-of-48 attempts thus far this season (56%). On that pace, Warren would finish the regular season with 131 three-point makes, shattering Chris Moore’s school record of 81 in a single-season, set during the 2007-08 season. Warren has at least shared the team lead in scoring in all six of their games this season: 18 @ Iowa; 28 vs. Furman; 20 vs. College of Charleston; 28 vs. Toccoa Falls; 25 vs. The Citadel; 15 vs. North Florida. He is averaging 22.5 points per game.
O-MAR OH-MY
Turning in perhaps the best freshman season in Charleston Southern (Baptist College) history, Omar Carter was tabbed as the 2007-08 Big South Freshman of the Year. The forward from Charlotte, NC, became the first freshman in program history to lead the Bucs in both scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.5 rpg). Additionally, he tallied a team-high 36 steals. As a result, Carter was tabbed by league coaches as a pre-season All-Big South selection entering his sophomore season. He has averaged nearly a double-double to this point in the season (17.0 pts/8.0 reb).
