Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet resigns from office

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCBD) -- Suspended Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet has resigned from office.

Nisbet sent a signed resignation letter to Governor Nikki Haley on Wednesday, February 3 resigning from his post "effective immediately."

The former coroner was under fire following an incident back in August of 2015 when he pulled a gun on his neighbor following an incident with a repo man. Nisbet said Leroy Fulton pulled a gun on the worker, Fulton denied those allegations.

He was arrested and charged with misconduct in office for the incident. He was given a $5,000 PR bond and was released from jail. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Governor Nikki Haley suspended him after an indictment.

Leroy Fulton's attorney filed paperwork in court saying his fourth amendment rights were violated the night Nisbet pulled Fulton over, got him out of his vehicle and pointed the gun at him.

The National Action Network also called for Governor Nikki Haley to ask Nisbet to step down as Coroner. Magistrate Court Judge Katrina Patton has been serving as County's interim coroner.
