COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — A fatal crash in Colleton County early Friday morning killed four people; one adult and three children. It happened near mile marker 44 southbound on I95. The identities of the deceased have not been released yet because the coroner is still working to notify their families.
Traffic was backed up for hours Friday morning as first responders worked to clear the scene. Many people at a nearby rest stop were shocked when they heard what had happened.
One woman says,"It's always hard when you hear about children in a way like that. Hopefully they didn't know what hit them and they were gone quickly."
South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating what caused the crash, but they do know the car was hit by a tractor trailer.
SCHP Sgt. Bob Beres says, "The tractor trailer struck the rear of the vehicle and they went down the right side of the roadway into a little ravine and struck several trees."
The car was a 2001 Ford Taurus with one adult and three children sitting in the backseat. All four of those people died.
News 2 asked, "As far as I know, Ford Tauruses only have three seats in the back, do we know if there were any issues with seatbelts or people not sitting in seats or on laps or anything like that?"
Sgt. Beres says, "It is still too early to tell. that vehicle received extensive damage, but that is something we will look at certainly over the course of the investigation."
People on the road are asking everyone to remember to drive safely and say they are keeping the families of those lost this morning in their prayers.
One woman says, "I hope the angels took them to heaven, that's all I can say."
The driver of the tractor trailtractor-trailer the hospital with minor injuries. The two people sitting in the front seat of the car have critical injuries, one was taken to Colleton Medical Center and the other was airlifted to Trident Hospital.
