CCSD a step closer to putting police officers in all elementary schools

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) -- The Charleston County School Board Operations Committee met Monday afternoon, in part, to discuss a proposal to put resource officers in all of its elementary schools.

A presentation led by CCSD's Head of Security, Michael Reidenbach, provided recommendations on how to improve campus security. At the top of the list was the recommendation to have an SRO in every school.

The committee voted to move forward with a proposal to allow staff to negotiate with local police departments to hire and train the resource officers. That cost would be about $1.8 million. That would cover part of the $115,000 it costs to train and equip the SROs. Reidenbach hopes the partnership with police would cover the remainder.

"When we look at a comprehensive security assessment after something like [the school shooting in Parkland], we engage in a full risk assessment and see this is a gap that we have that we need to fill," said Reidenbach.

The proposal will now go before the full school board at its next meeting.

Before the meeting began, Jennifer Robinovitz spoke to the board during public comments. She explained she is a Moultrie Middle School teacher and a parent of a Wando freshman. She said her niece was killed in the February 14 Parkland shooting.

She also described a time when a student brought a knife into her classroom and tried to kill her. She said the issue of campus security is personal for her.

"I am here to ask that you please listen to what they are asking and know that it is not nearly enough, but it is a starting place," Robinovitz said.

Other recommendations and costs from Reidenbach's presentation:

-District Search Team, $305,000

-Emergency Planner, $90,503

-Security at 75 Calhoun (CCSD headquarters), $50,000

-Elementary Security Relief, $238,000

-Middle/High School Zones, $238,000

-24-hour Security Operations Center, $167,000

-After School Visitor Management, $1,200,000
