Charleston man sentenced to 25 years in prison for shooting

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- A Charleston man was convicted for a shooting that injured two people including a child.

Calvin Brown Jr. 29, of Hampden Court, has been convicted of two counts of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime for the shooting of a child and an adult at Mary Street and America Street in May 2015.

Police responded about 8:40 p.m. to the playground at Mary and America in reference to a shooting.

When Officers arrived on scene they found Tyreik Gadsden, 7, with a gunshot wound to the right side of his back. He was 6 years old at the time. They also found Desmond Terrel Lewis, 23, with a gunshot wound to his left lower leg.

The shooting left Tyreik paralyzed from the waist down and wheel chair bound.

"We appreciate the outstanding work of the responding officers, the detectives, Crime Scene, the Solicitor's Office, SLED, the FBI, and the community," said Interim Police Chief Jerome Taylor. "Their outstanding work lead to the conviction of an individual who committed a crime beyond my comprehension," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyreik and his family."
