Fire at Dorchester County business now extinguished

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCBD) —  A fire at a Dorchester County business is now extinguished.

At 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, Dorchester County Fire Rescue (DCFR) received an alarm for a structure fire at a machine shop, adjacent to the Sterling Corporation, near the Town of Summerville. Crews arrived on scene within minutes and found a 60’ x 60’ [approximate] metal building with extensive smoke and fire conditions coming from the structure.

Forty-eight fire rescue personnel from Dorchester County Fire Rescue, Summerville Fire Rescue (SFR) and the North Charleston Fire Department (NCFD) extinguished the fire in one hour and thirty minutes, according to County spokeswoman Tiffany Norton.

Dorchester County Fire Chief, Tres Atkinson said “the quick response, by all departments, is proof of the continued success of the Automatic Aid Agreements between DCFR, SFR and NCFD.” Atkinson added “it was a seamless operation. All three departments are to be commended for their continued commitment to providing the highest quality of fire service.”

The Dorchester County Sherriff’s Office and EMS also responded to the scene.  No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
