Identity of passenger killed in wreck on Ravenel Bridge released

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The Charleston County Coroner's Office released the identity of the person killed on the Ravenel Bridge, Monday afternoon.

According to Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin, James A. Wiggins, 78, of Jamestown died from blunt force injuries.

Authorities responded to the Ravenel Bridge on Monday, December 11 just before 6:30 p.m.

We were told at the time, a northbound disabled-vehicle in the inside lane of the bridge was rear-ended by another vehicle. That car was also headed northbound in the same lane.

The passenger of the disabled vehicle that was rear-ended, Wiggins, died at the scene. Medics transported the drivers of both vehicles to the Medical University of South Carolina.

The driver of the disabled vehicle and Wiggins were inside of the vehicle when the accident occurred.

Three northbound lanes on the bridge were closed to traffic, along with the entrance ramp form the Crosstown, following the incident.
