Knightsville shopping center could be redeveloped soon

Former location of Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly store could be redeveloped soon

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - The Knightsville area shopping center where the former Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly used to be could be redeveloped in the near future.

Franklin Ridge of South Carolina presented plans for the Knightsville Crossing shopping center, on Central Ave. and Orangeburg Rd., to the Town of Summerville's Commercial Design Review Board last Thursday.

The plan calls for filling the space and keeping the existing tenants that currently surround it. New additions would include a gas station, reconfigured parking spaces, a fast food restaurant and more.

The petitioner is currently in negotiations with a potential anchor tenant and has not disclosed what could be the potential store.

The new development could be good for the remaining businesses in the shopping center.
"Any time you have a large vacancy in a shopping center it tends to drag the other tenets who might remain down," said Tim Macholl, Zoning Administrator for Summerville.

The land has not yet been purchased and the most recent review was only a conceptual review. The development would still have to get approved before construction or renovations can start.
