Marymeade Drive road project in Summerville breaks ground

Officials broke ground on the Marymeade Drive extension project

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) - - A road project aimed at easing traffic congestion near N. Main St. is just getting underway in Summerville.

Officials broke ground on the Marymeade Drive extension project on Thursday. The project will extend Marymeade Drive 1500 feet and connects it to Jockey Court near BJ's Wholesale Club, just off the I-26 exit that leads into Summerville.

Right now there is only one entrance to the shopping center and congestion is a problem.
"We know that we need to get traffic back to BJ's and this frontage road," said Summerville Mayor Wiley Johnson.

Mayor Johnson also said projects like this are just what the town needs.

"We've always played catch up with our road construction. This is a way that we can get ahead," said the mayor.

The project is expected to be complete by mid to late-spring.
