Student shot on NCCU campus, shooter at large, police say; lockdown lifted

WNCN Staff - DURHAM, NC (WNCN) - A 40 minute NCCU campus lockdown was put in place after Durham Police said a student was shot on the campus Sunday night.

At first, in what was called an "NCCU University Police Emergency," the school Tweeted that there was "active gunfire" around 11:15 p.m. Sunday.

"Active shooter. If safe, seek shelter away from gunfire. Active shooter. Lock your door," the EagleAlert Tweet said.

Durham Police told WNCN that a person was injured in a shooting on the NCCU campus at 10:53 p.m. Campus officials later said that the victim was a student.

The shooter in the incident has not been apprehended, Durham police said.

The student who was shot suffered non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Several police evidence cones could be seenĀ  - possibly marking bullet shells - on East Lawson Street near Alston Avenue, which runs between the campus stadium and a parking deck.

At 11:55 p.m., NCCU Police said that the lockdown was lifted.

"All clear. The campus lockdown has been lockdown lifted. Normal activities can resume," the Tweet said.

Police said that anyone with information about the incident should contact the NCCU Police Department at 919-530-6106.
