MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Air National Guard is conducting an air defense exercise over the Columbia and Florence areas as F-16 fighter jets escort civilian aircraft. Pilots and crew members conduct such periodic exercises to practice their response to possible airborne threats over the United States.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Supreme Court says prison inmate John Edward Weik should have a new hearing that could give him a chance to leave death row. In 1999, Weik was convicted in the shotgun slaying of the mother of his child in Knightsville.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - A dozen architecture students at Clemson University have spent the past year building trails and designing drainage plans after a devastating flood destroyed the South Carolina Botanical Garden. Now the garden is again a showcase of plant life from around the state after hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of repairs and remodeling.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson has hired Yale administrator Natalie Gonzalez as the athletic department's Senior Woman Administrator. The school announced Gonzalez's position Wednesday. She had spent the past six years at the Ivy League school where she oversaw football, men's lacrosse and men's and women's fencing programs.
