PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers have to set their rosters at 53 players by the end of the weekend. Backup quarterbacks Landry Jones and Joe Webb are hoping to stick around. Jones and Webb will get an extended look Thursday night when the two teams wrap up the preseason.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Cam Newton says he feels great and "there's no doubt" in his mind he'll be ready to play in the Panthers season opener Sept. 7 against Tampa Bay. Carolina's quarterback is recovering from a hairline fracture to multiple ribs and says he's improving with each day.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Clemson running back Zac Brooks had surgery on the foot he injured earlier this month. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney had previously said Brooks would miss the season and return next fall as a redshirt junior. Brooks was the team's leading returning rusher and was expected to be a significant part of the Tigers' offense this season.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Steve Spurrier says South Carolina's home stadium has been given a makeover since he arrived almost a decade ago. He hopes to add a Southeastern Conference championship banner to the decorations this season. The Gamecocks open the season Thursday night against Texas A&M.
