A former employee with the City of Charleston is charged with embezzlement.

The city says when Antonio Rutledge was employed with the City, it is believed he embezzled approximately $46,000 for personal use for more than a three-year period from January 2009 to April 2012.

Rutledge worked with the city from October 10, 2005 – April 25, 2012. His job title was Licensing and Permit Clerk. His annual salary was $23,981.82.

The city tells us that several procedures have been put in place to ensure that this type of incident does not reoccur again, including tightening controls within the system and more frequent reviews of reports by management.

This is an ongoing investigation.
