North Charleston man arrested after Thursday night chase that began on I-26

Posted: Updated:

A North Charleston man was arrested after he took police on a chase on Interstate 26 Thursday night.

48-year-old Donald Rickenbacker was traveling about 90 miles an hour on I-26E near Aviation Avenue, according to a police report. North Charleston Police activated their sirens and attempted to pull him over but Rickenbacker kept driving toward Tanger Outlet Boulevard. When the suspect pulled over at a red light, an officer got out of his vehicle and told him to put his hands in the air. The suspect then took off again, taking police on a chase to Centre Point Drive, and then toward I-526. He ended up crashing into a light pole, according to police.

Officers attempted to render aid to Rickenbacker, who told police he did not stop because he was driving with a suspended license.

He was arrested for failure to stop for a blue light and driving under a suspended license and taken to MUSC for treatment.

Department of Motor Vehicle records show that Rickenbacker had prior charges of driving under a suspended license over the last five years.
