Rally for marriage equality planned for downtown Charleston

Posted: Updated:

A group in the Lowcountry is joining thousands across the country who are holding demonstrations Monday supporting same-sex marriage and marriage equality.

The Charleston-based group The Alliance for Full Acceptance (AFFA) is holding a "peaceful and civil demonstration in support of equality and the freedom to marry for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people."

Hundreds are expected to gather at 6:00 PM on the steps of the U.S. Custom House on East Bay and Market Streets in downtown Charleston.

This comes a day before the United States Supreme Court is set to hear two days of arguments about the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8.

The group says that 170 cities in all 50 states are holding similar rallies.
