IOP City Council discusses beach access parking

Posted: Updated:

Parking during peak beach season has been an issue for years on Isle of Palms.

"The Beach Front Management Act says that we have a huge parking lot in the commercial district," said Linda Mitchell, of Isle of Palms. "And I think people who live in close proximity to the commercial business district need some relief."

On Tuesday, people living near the beach stressed to council members the need for change.

Rick Day, with Stantec, has been working with staff to develop a plan for beach access parking. He updated council on his progress.

Some of his strategies include giving consideration to parking on Ocean Boulevard, oceanfront parking throughout the city and improved signage.

Mayor Dick Cronin said the next step is to invite the South Carolina Department of Transportation in for a workshop. They must submit a plan for the SCDOT to reject, modify or approve.
