Two woman have been arrested after Charleston police say a 1-year-old was beaten with a broom while under  their care.

The police report says the child's mother noticed bruises and knots on her child after picking the child up from the baby sitter.  Upon questioning the baby sitter, Madeline Mikell, 43, of Reid Street, told the child's mother she should take the child to the hospital, although no reason was given as to why.

The 1-year-old's 3-year-old brother was also under the care of Mikell.  When the mother asked the 3-year old what happened, police reports say he told his mother another woman, Deesonia Smith,30, beat the boy with a broom.

Police say the mother went back to the Reid Street apartment to question the woman, and that's when police say Mikell confirmed the boy's story.

The 1-year-old was taken to MUSC for treatment.

Both woman are being held at the Charleston County jail.  Mikell is charged with unlawful conduct toward a child and Smith is charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child.
