Cell phones for soldiers

Cell Phones for Soldiers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free communication tools to active duty military members and veterans.

The organization was founded in 2004 by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, then 12 and 13 years old, with only $21. Cell Phones for Soldiers relies on generous donors for cash contributions and funds raised by the recycling of used cell phones.

News 2 would like to thank the Lowcountry for your continued support of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Last year, you helped us collect over 1,000 cell phones and provide 32,000 minutes of free talk time for soldiers overseas.

Lowcountry residents are encouraged to drop off unwanted cell phones at any of the following locations from April 1, 2014 through October 31, 2014.

Three things to remember before you donate your wireless phone:
 

  • Terminate your service
  • Clear the phone's memory of contacts and other stored information. Go to www.recyclewirelessphones.com to learn how to do this;
  • Remove your phone's SIM card, if it has one. Phones that operate on GSM networks use SIM cards. If you are not sure if your phone uses a SIM card or if you need assistance removing your SIM card, contact your wireless provider.
