Bond denied for man accused of shooting Charleston officer

Posted: Updated:

The man charged with shooting a Charleston City police officer over the weekend was denied bond Wednesday afternoon.

SLED Spokesman Thom Berry says 26-year-old Mark Blake, Jr. had the bond hearing in his hospital room at MUSC. Blake has been charged with attempted murder after police say he shot officer Cory Goldstein Saturday night.

According to police reports, the shooting incident began as a traffic stop on I-526 East at the Savannah Highway on-ramp. After the officer pulled him over, police say Blake ran from the scene towards Sam Rittenburg Blvd and then shot Goldstein multiple times in the chest, arm and leg. Goldstein also fired at the suspect hitting him in the arm and leg.

Both the suspect and the officer were taken to MUSC Saturday night. Goldstein was released from MUSC Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, Blake was still in the hospital.

Charleston City police will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon about the incident.
