CHARLESTON, SC -

A Mount Pleasant plastic surgeon is the first physician in South Carolina certified to implant the Natrelle 410 shaped silicone gel-filled breast implants.  Dr. Jack Hensel says the FDA-approved implants for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction offers more options for women. "They are more cohesive and more natural and are supposed to hold their shape a little bit better." Dr. Hensel says.

The Natrelle 410 was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in cosmetic breast augmentation and breast reconstruction in February.   Dr. Hensel says the implants are expected to appeal to women because they retain a more natural contour.

"These implants are highly cohesive and they are what we call form stable which means they don't collapse upon themselves so these implants will maintain the shape no matter how you turn the implant so it holds its form."

The Natrelle 420's carry similar risks as other silicone breast implants.  The FDA requires that the manufacturer, Allergan conduct a series of post approval studies to assess the long term safety, effectiveness and disease risks.
