Citadel VP is elected new president at SC State

Posted: Updated:
ORANGEBURG, SC -

South Carolina State University has chosen its new president.

Trustees voted 6-5 after a contentious four-hour meeting on Thursday to name Thomas Elzey the university's new leader. Elzey currently serves as executive vice president for finance, administration and operations at The Citadel.

During his interview on campus earlier this month, Elzey vowed to get the university on better financial footing if elected. Enrollment is dropping and the school has had to make cuts.

Elzey also promised to maintain the heritage of the historically black university in Orangeburg.

Elzy wasn't the choice of dozens of students, who urged trustees to give interim President Cynthia Warrick the job permanently. But trustees did not name Warrick as one of its three finalists.

The university has been searching for a president for 13 months.
