KIAWAH ISLAND, SC -

Firefighters responded to a small fire at Kiawah Island's The Sanctuary Hotel Tuesday morning.

St. John's Fire/Rescue, City of Charleston Fire Department and James Island Fire Department were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 1 Sanctuary Drive around 11:30 a.m. St. John's Tower 704 arrived and reported nothing showing outside the building.

The hotel staff told firefighters that they had extinguished a smoldering fire confined to a room used by a contracted cleaning company.

St. John's Fire/Rescue says the possible cause of the fire was spontaneous ignition due to improperly stored towels used for cleaning.

According to St. John's, materials susceptible to spontaneous ignition, such as oily rags, are required to be stored in an approved safety container and contents shall be removed and disposed of daily.

No injuries were reported.
