Patriots Point getting report on Yorktown

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC -

The board of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is scheduled to get an update on how much it will cost to clean hazardous chemicals and liquids from compartments aboard the aging aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.

The board is meeting on Wednesday. Patriots Point wants to restore the vessel and an earlier estimate put that cost at about $80 million.

The first step before anything can be done was to make an environmental assessment of the vessel. The board hears that report on Wednesday. It's been estimated that removing the hazardous materials could cost $6 million.

Last month, the museum unveiled plans to spend up to $5 million to upgrade exhibits on the USS Yorktown using everything from holograms to computers.
