Goose Creek considers 2% hospitality fee

Posted: Updated:

The Goose Creek City Council is considering a 2% hospitality fee on all prepared food and beverages. This includes alcoholic beverages, wine and beer.

The proposed ordinance has been taken up in a city workshop and is expected to be on the council agenda on May 14.

Currently in Goose Creek, the sales tax rate on prepared foods and beverages is currently 8%. It breaks down to 6% for state sales tax, 1% for Berkeley County Local Option sales tax and 1% Berkeley County Capital Project sales tax.

If the proposed ordinance goes before the council and passes, the money from the fee will be used on tourism-related cultural, recreational or historical facilities.

The City of Charleston has a similar hospitality tax. Revenue from the Charleston tax was $9,804,171 in 2010, $10,604,707 in 2011 and $11,496,407 in 2012.
