Cool School: Northwood Academy

Posted: Updated:

Northwood Academy offers a Christian based education in a fun learning environment. We're in North Charleston for our Cool School of the week.

The school was established in 1978 as an outreach of Northwood Church. The private Christian school has 700 students. The lower school campus has infants through fifth grade. The upper school campus has 6th through 12th grade students. Students attend chapel on Fridays.

Northwood Academy has academic awards and state and regional championships in football, baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, swimming, and volleyball. Upper school principal Dr. Darlene Anderson says the family friendly environment and warm school culture make them special. She says,

"Northwood Academy is an awesome school, infants right through12th grade. One of the things that makes it special is the students. The students that come here are very much committed to getting the best academic preparation possible, and then we have fun." Junior Noah Hammond says,

"It's a smaller school. Everybody knows everybody, and we all get along. There's no drama or anything. It's just a nice place to be." "I love it. You want to go to school here. When you wake up in the morning, you're actually excited to go," says seventh grade student MaKenna Bryant. History teacher Ronald Getz says, "You have very respectful students. You have very supportive parents. Overall a great atmosphere. We have an administration that allows us to teach in the style you're comfortable with, but also allows you to diversify." Kindergarten teacher Andrea Johnson says, "It's a place where the child can learn and grow and get the most excellent education. At the same time, they know what they are, and who God has made them to be, and that brings the warmth." Kindergarten student Vincent Kimery says, "I get to learn and have fun."

Students also have drama and band. The school holds fundraisers for various charities throughout the year. The Moms in Touch group sponsors a monthly dinner for faculty every month.

Coming up Wednesday on News 2 Today, we will tell you about Northwood Academy's Living History project.

We want to hear about the good things going on at your school. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com. Maybe your school will be the next Cool School of the week.
