Trooper involved in wreck on Highway 176

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC -

A South Carolina Highway Patrol officer is on their way to the hospital after being involved in a wreck on Highway 176 Friday morning.

The incident involved the patrol car and an SUV. When News 2's Rebecca Ryan arrived on the scene both vehicles were in a ditch and both had extensive damage.

Both the trooper and the female driver of the Jeep SUV were transported to local hospitals.  The patrolman has since been released.  No word on the other driver at this time.

A preliminary report indicates that the trooper was responding to the scene of a wreck, approximately two miles away, involving a motorcycle and a truck at Highway 17-A and Old Summerville Road.

The initial investigation reveals that the trooper did have blue lights and siren activated when the Cruiser struck a Jeep SUV.  All indications are that traffic was yielding for the marked cruiser when the SUV pulled onto the highway in front the trooper's marked cruiser.

The incident occurred on the corner of McLaurin Road and Highway 176.

The incident remains under investigation by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.
