National Weather Service to change how Flood Warnings are issued

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service is preparing to change the way they handle flood warnings. When a flood warning is issues, the entire county is covered by that warning.

As an example, when the Santee River near Jamestown is under a flood warning, all of Berkeley County is highlighted as being in a flood warning.

Meteorologist Ron Morales at the National Weather Service Charleston says, "When that flood warning goes out for a river, the only way we can alert is to alert the entire county."

Morales says that will soon change, "That's going to be cut down by what we call a polygon or a box to try to cut down and not look like it's alerting the entire county."

Morales says he is not sure when the new alerts will begin. Storm Team 2 will let you know as soon as the change is made.
