New political party taking shape in SC

Posted: Updated:

Two men are on a mission to create a new state political party.

Former state Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex and Dr Oscar Lovelace started the movement they named the American Party.

The pair and their supporters are holding meetings across the state to garner support for a new party.

The next meeting is Thursday at 6:30 PM and the Congregational Church Social Hall located at 150 Meeting Street.

Supporters say they are forming the party out of exhaustion of the current state of politics.

The goal is to have the 10,000 signatures needed to form the official party and put up candidates in 2014.  Supporters call the potential party modern and moderate with no career politicians.

For more information on The American Party, log on to http://www.americanpartysc.com/ or follow it on Facebook under "The American Party".

To create a state party:

Submit a petition of at least 10 thousand signatures to the State Election Commission.

The State Election Commission certifies the party.

The party must submit candidates for elections and hold party meetings on a regular basis to maintain certification.
