Justices find baby Veronica case "difficult"

Posted: Updated:

The Supreme Court of the United States released several decisions this morning but the case involving a local couple, Adoptive Couple V. Baby Girl, was not one of them.

The case surrounding the Indian Child Welfare Act is expected to determine if a tribal law can block an adoption, and whether the term "parent" as written in the law includes an unwed biological father who has not complied with state law rules to attain legal status as a parent.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear Veronica case in less than 24 hours

The little girl the Lowcountry has come to know as baby Veronica was taken from her adoptive parents on Dec. 31, 2011 to live with her biological father, Dusten Brown, in Oklahoma. Three-year-old Veronica had never known Brown but has lived with him since the transition.

When asked on the SCOTUS blog about the case involving the ICWA, they replied, "no word today. Earliest we could hear would be on Thursday at 10 a.m. This case is probably taking a while both because it was argued in April and because the Justices seemed to find it difficult."

Count on 2 to monitor the opinions closely Thursday for a decision on the case, as one is expected by next Monday.
