Charleston Collegiate School's Kayaking camp provides fun summer learning for campers

Posted: Updated:

Summer break is here and summer camps are underway.  On and in the water is a great way to spend your summer days. We head to Johns Island for our Cool Camp of the week.

Enjoy the long days of summer, and the water at the Preserve at Fenwick Hall is a perfect place. The Charleston Collegiate School offers a kayaking camp at the Preserve at Fenwick Hall. In addition to having fun, students learn about the importance of the environment. Camp director Brooke Haynie says, "We take the kids out kayaking. We teach them kayak safety. We take them crabbing, fishing, do a bunch of cast netting. They like playing in the pluff mud, and just teaching hem about ecology, really teaching without them even knowing they're learning. If we can make our students stewards of the environment that's the biggest thing."

This is the second year of the kayaking camp. Campers become certified through the American Canoe Association. Camper Brinley Frank says, "We went kayaking, swimming in the pond, the river, we also got to play in pluff mud. We get to learn while having fun." Rhyanne Foster says, "We are learning about the marshes and what lives in them."

Do you have a cool camp you want to spread the word about? We are highlighting camps that promote continued education, mentoring, health and fitness, and creativity. Send an email to Octavia at omitchell@wcbd.com, and your summer camp may be featured on News 2.
