ISLE OF PALMS, SC -

Lifeguards from across South Carolina are scheduled to show off their skills in a series of events.

The 16th annual South Carolina Recreation and Park Association's lifeguard competition is set for Friday on the beach on the Isle of Palms and at a pool in nearby Mount Pleasant.

At the beach, the teams comprised of four lifeguards compete in ocean swims, a mile run and rescue events.

At the pool, events include competitions in lifesaving techniques such as managing spinal injuries and assessing injuries to swimmers. There are also 50-yard sprints and submerged water rescue competitions.

Organizers say the competition helps lifeguards work as a team and to think quickly in life-threatening situations.
