Lowcountry students attend Palmetto Cyber Security Summer Camp

Posted: Updated:

Students from Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester District Two school districts are wrapping up a cyber security camp in Downtown Charleston.

The inaugural Palmetto Cyber Security Summer Camp was held at Lowcountry Tech Academy on King Street.

During the week long camp, students experienced hands-on activities, such as decoding information they detect from cyber spies, and cyber competitions. The camp also welcomed more than a dozen teachers from the three Lowcountry school districts for a teacher "cyber boot camp".

Community partners assisted in organizing this camp including SPAWAR with support from the National Defense Education Program. Bill Littleton from SPAWAR says, "The SPAWAR Atlantic outreach has been working with state board of education on rolling out a cyber security curriculum for the state of South Carolina, because of that we wanted to set up a cyber security camp to help gain awareness in the cyber security field." Cyber security camp is a part of SPAWAR's STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Initiative.

Benefit Focus is also one of the camp's community partners.
