1 dead, search for 2 missing swimmers in Beaufort

Posted: Updated:

One body has been recovered during the search for missing swimmers at Hunting Island in Beaufort County.  Search and rescue teams are still looking for two more swimmers.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the body of a 17-year-old male was found around 6 p.m. Sunday.  The search for a 38-year-old and another 17-year-old stopped for the night around 8:30.  Hunting Island park rangers are continuing to patrol from the shore throughout the night.

The swimmers were reported missing about 4:45 Sunday afternoon by a 14-year-old who had been swimming with the victims.  When she became separated from the group, she swam to shore to call for help, saying the missing swimmers were struggling against the strong currents.

Multiple emergency agencies were on scene earlier in the day, including the Sheriff's Office, US Coastguard, Fripp and Lady's Island Fire Departments and Hunting Island park rangers.

This story is still developing.
