Edisto River poses danger to all swimmers

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC -

After weeks of rain the Edisto River is at a dangerously high level.

Bobby Wright with Dorchester Fire said the department is working 12 hours shifts to keep you safe from the water.

"We've had a lot of people trying to float and the river is at its peak, it's as high as I've ever seen it," Wright said.

He can't force people to stay out but he said they are keeping tabs on them, making people sign waivers and calling to check on the ones determined to go in the water.

"I wouldn't even put people in the water because the current is so strong," Wright said, "If they get up to right there, you can see where the current is moving, there's no way they can fight that I promise you."

That warning was enough for one family who said summer vacation isn't supposed to be this scary.

"I'm afraid it'll pull somebody out, I mean it's really strong, you can see it moving pretty fast and we have little ones so I don't want to take them, I don't want to take the chance," Victoria Mathews said.

The river has flooded up to some homes in the area. Boat Landing Road, a residential street, is closed and will not re-open until conditions improve.

"Two hours later he returned and had his gun over [the front counter] and proceeded to cock it and ask for our money box. I handed him the money box and he took up the tray and dashed out the door with my wife in hot pursuit. For her protection, I went after her," Mirabile explained.
