Want insects to stay away? There are good products that can keep you pest free.

A new report, released by the Environmental Working Group finds that no bug repellent works against every pest, but your best bets are those products made with active ingredients registered with the U.S. environmental protection agency and approved by the Centers for Disease Control.

The EWG report says tests have found that four registered chemicals provide a high level of protection from a number of bug bites and are also found in many popular products on your drugstore shelves. The EWG lists them as picaridin, I -R -3-5-3-5, oil of lemon eucalyptus and its synthetic derivative known as PMD and Deet.   Despite its reputation as being a powerful chemical, researchers found Deet to be the most effective and least toxic of all the chemicals.

The EWG warns that although these repellents are effective and safe they need to be applied correctly. consumers must follow the basic instructions to make sure that they don't overexpose their skin to these chemicals.
