A Town of Mt. Pleasant employee has been arrested and accused of embezzling more than $50,000 from the town.

The employee at the center of the accusations is Candice Bottorff. She worked as a Human Resource Technician for five years.

"It is with regret that I inform the residents of our town that a Mount Pleasant employee has been terminated from her employment based on an audit led by the Finance Department and a confession secured by the Mount Pleasant Police Department," Town Administrator Eric DeMoura said.

That audit revealed that Bottorff embezzled $52,239 from the town. Demoura said that Mt. Pleasant is insured and will recover all of the funds.

"This person has let the community and her co-workers down and will be held accountable for her actions. The Town of Mount Peasant has no tolerance for such actions and we plan to prosecute Ms. Bottorff to the full extent of the law," DeMoura said.

Bottorff was given a $50,000 bond Monday afternoon. She is expected to appear in court again on November 1.
