Santee Cooper schedules new borrowing vote

Posted: Updated:

The board of the state-owned utility Santee Cooper will hold another vote on authorizing a record $1.3 billion in borrowing after legal questions were raised about the initial vote last week.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that Santee Cooper spokeswoman Mollie Gore said another vote will be held next week in what she calls "a precautionary measure".

The newspaper raised questions about last week's vote because local media were not given notice of the meeting in violation of the Freedom of Information Act. First Amendment lawyer Jay Bender said the violation could put the bond sale in question.

The newspaper had asked for emailed copies of all Santee Cooper agendas.

The meeting notice was posted only in the lobby of Santee Cooper headquarters and on its website.
