Charleston's First Day Festival offers free school supplies for students

Posted: Updated:

Lowcountry students head back to school next week, but before you do, the city of Charleston wants you to enjoy a big back to school celebration this Sunday.

Weather permitting, the city of Charleston's 11th annual First Day Festival will be held Sunday, August 18th from 1-4 p.m at Liberty Square near the aquarium. Hundreds of volunteers will give out school supplies, and information. All parents in Charleston county are invited to attend and bring your children. Students can enjoy entertainment and an amazing host of free resources. Charleston county school superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley says the free event is a partnership with the community. Dr. McGinley says, "It's really a celebration of education, and it speaks to the importance of education in our community, and the fact that out businesses turn out, our television stations turn out, and our dignitaries come down, and welcome the kids back to school and give them the tools they need to be successful."

First Day Festival is organized by the mayor's office for children, youth and families. The festival is part of the "First Day" initiative, which encourages parents to take their children to school on the first day.

News 2 will be there as well, make sure you come by our booth and say hello.
