Charleston City Council considers texting while driving ban

Posted: Updated:

Charleston City Council is the latest to discuss a potential texting while driving ban. The ban was first proposed by Mayor Joe Riley on Wednesday night during a Traffic and Transportation meeting.

Councilman Bill Moody responded to the ban by saying, "It's a bad habit to have and we just need to stop it."

Councilman Moody also went on to say that despite potential difficulties in enforcing the ban, in his opinion, it is better to do something than nothing. "Unfortunately people kind of think that if you don't have a law against it, that it must be ok. So since we don't have a law against texting, it must be ok to text and drive, which it is not."

Chief Greg Mullen of Charleston City Police was there during the committee meeting. He is all for anything that will make our roadways safer. "We have got to get started somewhere, and this is what you hear about in the media right now so I do think this is a great place to start. We start with the texting, and then we explore what other things we might be able to do to make our roadways safer."

The public hearing to get citizen's input will be held September 9th, at 5 PM at City Hall.
