14-foot tiger shark caught off North Myrtle Beach

Posted: Updated:

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Here's a real fish story - a 14-foot, 700-pound tiger shark caught off North Myrtle Beach.

And, on Friday, an 8 1/2 foot, 200-pound shark caught on the surf on Sullivan's Island on Friday. (Read story)

The giant tiger shark was caught last Saturday off North Myrtle when six Marines from Camp LeJeune took a charter boat to go shark fishing while on a bachelor party.

Capt. Richard Long Jr. says the mate and the Marines in the 43-foot boat spotted the large shark about three miles offshore in about 35 feet of water. Long says they looped a rope around its tail and dragged it backward until the shark drowned. Long says he's never seen anyone pull in a shark that big.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports tiger sharks are one of the top three types of sharks involved in unprovoked fatal shark attacks.

On Friday afternoon, a Sullivan's Island man caught a big one right off the beach. (Click for story)

The fisherman who wants to remain anonymous, says the Lemon shark was about 8 ½ feet long and more than 200 pounds. (See photo in slideshow above story)

The fisherman says he was on 100 yards from shore and was Tarpon fishing when he reeled in the shark. He says he used hooks that dissolve so the shark was not harmed.

He also put it back in the water shortly after about 70 people on the beach snapped photos and took videos with their cell phones.

The man says he goes to the beach often to fish and surf and says sharks are always out there but he has seen more of them closer to shore lately.
