Summerville man electrocuted while working on ice machine

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, Aug. 24th at 6:20 p.m. the Berkeley County Coroner's Office was notified of a death on Red Oak Circle, Summerville in Berkeley County.

The coroner says 68 year old, James Montgomery was last seen about 10:30 a.m. working on an ice machine in the garage behind his home.  When his wife could not reach him by phone, she called her son who lives across the street to go over and check on him.

The son found him lying on the floor near the ice machine and called EMS. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Deputy Coroner Darnell Hartwell.

Montgomery was taken to MUSC for an autopsy to be conducted. After the autopsy and an on site investigation, Coroner Bill Salisbury ruled the death an accident and the cause of death was electrocution.

This is the 2nd electrocution in Berkeley County in the last 2 weeks.  The other was while working on an air conditioning unit on Aug. 12th.
