MONTGOMERY, Ala. -

Hundreds of dogs have been rescued and 10 people were arrested following a multi-state dog fighting ring investigation that began in Auburn, Ala.

On Friday, authorities from Texas, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama executed 13 search warrants at sites housing badly abused animals and hosted gambling events, authorities announced during a Monday press conference.

"These defendants were betting between $5,000 and $200,000 on one dog fight," U.S. Attorney George L. Beck Jr. said.

The investigation started three years ago by Auburn Police and resulted in the recovery of 367 dogs.

"This is a great example of federal, state and local agencies working together to make communities safer," said Auburn Police Chief Paul Register.

Remains of dead animals were found at some of the searched sites.

The ASPCA and Humane Society assisted in seizing the animals and is now caring for some of them.
